Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has backed John Mikel Obi to be crowned as African Footballer of the Year at the upcoming Glo/CAF African Football Awards. Keshi, who noted that it has been a long time since a Nigerian clinched the top honor, stated that it will help boost the morale of players in his team and Nigerian football in general if Mikel wins the Award. “It will boost the team and Mikel and all Nigerians because it has been a long time since we last won the award and I know we deserve to win this year”, Keshi said. On his own nomination as African Coach of the Year, Keshi refused to be tempted into making any predictions, but noted that it would be a great honour to win the Award. Keshi may not travel with the Chan-bound Super Eagles on Tuesday next week, as he is primed to win the African Coach of the Year Award after successfully guiding Nigeria to win the African Cup of Nations and qualify for the 2014 Fifa World Cup.
